This day holds a special place in India’s history, and as we get set to enjoy the festivities, let’s explore what Navy Day is all about, its history, why it falls on December 4th, and what exciting things are planned for this year’s Indian Navy day celebration. 

What You Need to Know About Navy Day - A Quick History

The celebration of the first Royal Indian Navy Day was on October 21, 1944. The idea was to help more people understand and appreciate the Navy’s important work.  

The celebration continued, with Navy Day 1945 taking place on December 1 in Bombay and Karachi. It wasn’t until 1972 that Navy Day was officially moved to December 4 to remember the successful naval actions during the Indo-Pakistan War. This decision also led to the introduction of Navy Week, observed from December 1 to 7 every year. 

Why Indian Navy Day is Celebrated 

On December 4, we remember a brave attack on a naval base in Karachi, Pakistan. This day is a tribute to the courageous actions of the Indian Navy during a crucial time. During Navy Day. 

What you can do this Navy Day 2023

  • You can visit Indian naval warships and aircraft.  
  • There’s also a Military Photo Exhibition organized by journalists from Ernakulum, adding a journalistic touch to the festival.  
  • The Naval Institute of Aeronautical Technology engages in community service at Good Hope Old Age Home, Fort Kochi, showing the Navy’s commitment to helping the community.  
  • Navy Day also features fun events like the Navy Ball, Navy Queen, and various contests. 

About the Indian Navy

The Indian Navy is led by the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) from the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Navy). It’s divided into three Commands, each led by a Flag officer Commanding-in-Chief: 

  • The Western Naval Command (Headquarters at Mumbai) 
  • The Eastern Naval Command (Headquarters at Visakhapatnam) 
  • The Southern Naval Command (Headquarters at Kochi) 

What's Happening for Navy Day 2023

This year’s celebration promises to be exciting, with events like: 

  • Sindhudurg Fort in Maharashtra: A historic place where the events will take place. 
  • Twenty Warships and 40 Aircraft: Showing off planes like MiG 29K, LCA Navy, and MARCOS units, displaying India’s naval strength. 
  • Mega Event Away from Major Naval Stations: This is the first time the Indian Navy is organizing such a big event away from its usual locations. 
  • Unveiling the Statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj: A special moment honoring a legendary figure at Rajkot-Malvan. 
  • Art Gallery Depicting Shivaji’s Life: Pictures and exhibits showcasing the life and achievements of the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. 
  • Operational Demonstration: A display covering different naval operations to show what the Navy can do. 
  • Performance by the Naval Band, Continuity Drill, and Hornpipe Dance: Adding a cultural touch to the celebration, featuring talents of the Sea Cadet Corps (SCC) cadets.
